How many of you remember the Beaudoin Family? They were the premiere French-Canadian traditional music family in Burlington in the 70's and 80's. There has been a lot of interest in their music within the last few years and the result has been the Beaudoin Legacy Project. Two regionally famous fiddlers and local family members and friends will be getting together to play music, sing and dance in the style of a family party on
Friday February 5th at 8 p.m. $8
FRENCH CANADIAN FIDDLING & SONGS, NEW ENGLAND & SWEDISH FIDDLING, ETC. ETC......
GEORGE WILSON & DAVID KAYNOR and members of the Beaudoin Legacy
Louis Beaudoin was a great player of French Canadian fiddle music, and through his recordings from the 1970's had a big influence on lots of younger fiddlers. His family is a storehouse of French songs passed down through generations. Daughters Carmen Bombardier and Nina Beaudoin are keeping alive the songs they learned from their mother, the late Julie Beaudoin, grandson Glenn Bombardier plays Louis' tunes on Louis' fiddle as well as stepdancing with his sisters Elena Alexander and Nikki Charbonneau. Two of the (once) young fiddlers influenced by Louis were George Wilson and David Kaynor, both well-known and respected in the New England contradance world, who will join with various Beaudoin family members and other musicians to have a rollicking house party with everything from French songs to Swedish fiddle tunes, which David is an expert at.
Bring snacks and beverages to the party!
On Saturday morning, February 6th at 10 a.m. you can learn two-fiddle tunes, harmony and technique from David and George; at 11:00 a.m. a fiddle workshop with David and at 1:00 p.m. a workshop with George. Each workshop is $15, all are $40. To sign up for a workshop or workshop(s) register by phone 802-233-3144 or email ben@vpal-us.org.

Jean Rohe & Friends
Vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Jean Rohe performs a night of multi-lingual original music at the novel listening room, North End Studio. Playing mandolin and a cornucopia of Latin American percussion instruments, Jean, along with collaborators Ilusha Tsinadze (guitar), Liam Robinson (accordion), Benjy Fox-Rosen (bass), and Aaron Shafer-Haiss (percussion) present original music from Jean’s debut album Lead Me Home, along with music written in September at the Blue Mountain Center artist colony, inspired by sources as far reaching as Brazil and Perú, and as close to home as her city, New York.
"Ms. Rohe is a confident
young singer whose compositions tend toward a literate and imploring
tone."
- Nate Chinen, New York Times
Celebrating her
debut album, Lead Me Home, Jean Rohe
is quickly becoming a gem of New York City’s jazz and Brazilian music scene.
After winning both the audience favorite and second place award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, Jean
assembled an unusual sextet, featuring accordion, clarinet, and South American
percussion. The resulting project
involves the full breadth of Jean’s stylistic attractions, challenging
traditional boundaries around musical genres.
Her original compositions and fresh arrangements of songs from Latin America explore the intersections of jazz, North American folk music, Brazilian and Afro-Peruvian traditions. Her singing and compositions have now filled venues from the Birdland to Havana’s Teatro Nacional.
What sets Jean’s performance apart is that
it invites the listener to engage with body, heart, and mind, through
captivating storytelling, astute, socially conscious lyrics, and lively rhythms
and melodies, in a participatory experience that involves singing, clapping, or
dancing along. “The act of singing together is uniquely subversive,” Jean
says. “It breaks us out of our
individual isolation and carries us into a new space of community with our
fellow human beings.”
A versatile
musician, Jean began her musical career at eight years old with her family folk
band. She has performed with Blue Note
recording artist, Robert Glasper, Cuban jazz drummer Dafnis Prieto, and can
also be heard with David Moore’s new music ensemble, “Bing and Ruth”, Hector
Morales’s Afro-Peruvian “Afrodita”, the chamber group “Anicha Quartet”, and in
duet with Liam Robinson, playing traditional American and Irish folk
music. She has been heard on New York
public radio as part of the Wordless Music Series and co-wrote and performed
the music for the feature film “Noise” (2004).
“…among the finest
performances I've heard by any singer….A thoroughly impressive performance from
someone who is clearly a singer to watch.” –Darcy James Argue,
composer/arranger

You are invited to a special event. I will be teaching FORZA classes on Saturday, February 13, 9am - 12 pm at the North End Studio to raise money for a special bike for my good friend, Hannah. 100% of money raised will go towards her bike from AMBUCS. I hope you can attend!
I met Hannah in September of 2004. For 4 years, I was her individual assistant at her preschool, and now I take care of her after school. Hannah has Rett syndrome, which prevents functional use of her hands, and impairs other motor functions. Hannah has enjoyed riding adaptive bikes at school, and would love to have one of her own. What 8-year-old wouldn’t?
Forza is a unique, cardiovascular and strength-building workout using a samurai sword. This is a great chance to try a new workout and help a little girl get a bike. Minimum $15 donation per hour.
